About
My artwork links the world of Literature and Art. I am a photographer and my photographs are of scenes from different literary works. My recent work focuses on fairytales and stories like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and The Chronicles of Narnia; these are the stories of my childhood. My artwork is about the experience and memory of the Literature. My work is impressionistic, linking glimpses of a particular scene from children’s literature, and visual memories of what would have been seen while reading the story. I take photographs of a particular point in a story, and put text onto the photograph. Thus concretely intermingling the two.
My process often involves fabricating 3D scenes and photographing them. I sometimes sculpt the pages of the book into a particular scene in the story. When photographing the sculptures, I take into consideration point of view, which brings a sense of disorientation. My photographs look from the ground up, diagonally, and up close. I photograph sometimes by not even looking in the viewfinder, which helps me to not frame the photograph. If I did it might turn out how the object or scene would be “normally” viewed.
I am a graduate from Kutztown University. I have a Bachelor of Fine Art. with a photography concentration. I have a minor in Literature and Art History.
I have been in Group Shows including, “Kutztown Select” at the Dixon Center (PA state system of Higher Education), Harrisburg, PA, two Group Shows of student work in the Sharadin Art Building, Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA, the Student Exhibition in the Miller Gallery, Kutztown University, Kutztown, as well as “Salon De Refuse”, Group Show in Eckhaus, Kutztown, PA.
Recently I have been on a journey that has taken me to the Netherlands and Germany. I am a photojournalist for Eastern Mennonite Missions for a short term Go Assignment. I will continue this adventure until December. I am photographing the missionary families that are working in Europe; seeing how they are spreading the light around the globe.
